The browser extension and your privacy
The Research Workbench extension for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome saves the page you are reading into the Research Workbench program on your own computer. Everything it handles goes there and nowhere else: not to us, not to anyone else.
What it reads, and when
Only the page you choose to save, at the moment you press its button or its shortcut: the page's content, its title and its address, and the links on it, to find the paper's PDF where the page links to one. It reads no other page and nothing in the background.
When the PDF you are saving is at a different address from the page, the extension asks your permission to read that one site, and fetches the PDF from it. It never asks for more than that site, and never in advance.
Where it goes
To the Research Workbench program on the same computer, through the browser's native messaging: the browser starts the program and passes it the page directly, without using the network. The program keeps what you save in your own vault, a Research Workbench folder in your Documents.
The extension sends nothing to us or to any third party. It has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, loads no code from anywhere, and makes no network requests apart from fetching a PDF you asked it to save.
If you choose to link the workbench to a cloud account, the workbench itself can then sync your projects. That is a setting in the workbench, separate from the extension, and described in the sync guide.
What it keeps in the browser
- The names of your projects, folders and tags, so the list of places to save to appears at once.
- The sites you have saved pages from, each with the place you saved to last, so it is chosen for you next time.
- Pages you saved while the workbench was closed, until the workbench takes them.
- The titles of the last few pages saved, shown in the extension's window.
These stay in your browser's storage for the extension, on your computer, and are removed with the extension.
Questions and changes
Ask about any of this in the forum. If the extension ever changes what it reads, where it sends it or what it keeps, this page changes first, with its date.
How to add the extension, and what it can and cannot do, is in the extension guide. The website and the cloud workbench have their own privacy policy.
