Research Workbench

Pricing

Free beta Research Workbench is in a free beta. The desktop workbench is free, and the workbench in the cloud is free for invited researchers while the beta lasts: use AI with your own keys, or with a model on your own computer. Nothing is charged. When the beta ends, the prices below apply to the cloud; you will be told at least 30 days before, and nothing is charged unless you choose to subscribe.

After the beta, the desktop workbench stays free, and the workbench in the cloud is a subscription. With it, you can use hosted AI models without keys of your own, and pay for what you used at the end of each month. Everything is software, delivered at once: there is nothing to wait for and nothing posted.

The desktop workbench

Free. Windows, macOS and Linux.

Your papers, notes and projects on your own computer: import PDFs, Word documents and slides, search them by their words and by what they mean, read them, write papers with their citations, and ask AI models about them, with every request recorded. Download it after registering a free account.

AI costs nothing with a model on your own computer, through Ollama. With a hosted model - Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini - you use your own API key and pay the provider directly, at its prices, or, with a cloud subscription, the workbench's keys.

The workbench in the cloud

Free during the beta. Afterwards a subscription, paid in advance and renewed until you cancel it.

The Research Workbench in your browser, at app.researchworkbench.space: everything the desktop workbench does, with your projects synced between your computers, an off-site copy of them, and 500 MB of storage for your original files. An assistant such as Claude can be connected to read your vault. It starts as soon as the first payment goes through.

More storage, on top of a subscription:

During the beta, the cloud workbench is free and open to invited researchers; you can ask for it from your account.

AI on the workbench's keys

After the beta, for subscribers. Billed monthly, afterwards; nothing paid in advance.

With a subscription, you can use hosted AI models - a fast and a capable one from each of Anthropic, OpenAI and Google - without keys of your own: summarising a paper, answering a question from your papers, checking a claim. Each request is priced from what it read and wrote, at the provider's own price plus 40%; the models and their prices are listed in the workbench's Settings. A request that fails is not charged.

What you used in a month is added up and charged on the 1st of the next, to the card on your subscription, as one item on your invoice; less than £1 is carried to the next month. You set the monthly limit, and a request that would pass it is not made. The workbench shows what you have used this month, against your limit, and what each request cost.

Cancelling and refunds

You can cancel a subscription at any time, under Manage what you pay in the workbench's Settings. It then runs to the end of the period you paid for, and nothing you keep in it is deleted.

You can cancel a subscription within 14 days of buying it and have the rest of its period refunded. AI use is charged only after it has been supplied, so there is nothing paid for it in advance to refund.

Prices are in pounds; the payment page shows them in your own currency where it can, with any tax due where you are. A subscription's price is never changed without at least 30 days' notice. The terms of use say all of this in full.

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns.
