Citations
Citing references and notes as you write, the citation styles, and how the reference list is made.
Citations are written in the text with citation keys and written out in the paper's style when it is read or exported.
| You write | It means |
|---|---|
[@lee2004] |
A citation in brackets |
[@lee2004, p. 12] |
With a page |
[@lee2004; @barke2023] |
Several at once |
@lee2004 |
In the sentence: Lee and See (2004) argue… |
A reference's citation key is shown in its document's Details drawer, as Cited as, and can be changed there.
The Cite picker
Cite, above the editor, opens a picker with two tabs:
- A reference: find one by author, title, year or key. Choose it, optionally type a Page (
12or12-14), and press Insert, or Copy to put the citation on the clipboard. - A note: your notes on highlighted passages, from documents filed under a reference. Insert quotation puts in the quoted passage with its citation and page; Cite only puts in the citation alone.
Under the editor, Citations lists every citation in the section and how it will read. A key that matches no reference is marked no such reference.
Styles
Choose the style in Paper settings:
- APA 7
- Harvard (Cite Them Right)
- IEEE
- Chicago author–date
The reference list is added at the end, made from the references the paper cites. A sealed version keeps the style it was sealed with. In Settings → Writing, Make the web addresses in the reference list links makes the addresses in exported files clickable.
